Cowboys and Indians

the 4th Series of the Koboi Project

This project is run by Niranjan Rajah, Assistant Professor, School of Interactive Arts and Technology in Vancouver.

We propose to present a special edition of Cowboys and Indians, as a part of [TCWNN].  This presentation consists of two images Pazham Neeyappa and Indian Cowboy, as well as the Mango of Truth performance.   In keeping with the BM theme of Radical Ritual this work will exemplify how, even traditional rituals are constantly being revivified and radicalized.  Pazham Neeyappa was captured outside the Rex cinema in Singapore. It presents the Koboi at the feet of Thalaivar (the Boss) Rajinikanth as he appears in the 2016 blockbuster Kabali.  It will be rendered as a 15 ft flag banner. The banner will stand at the camp but it will be retractable and portable, which will be advantageous in dust and wind storms as well enabling the installation/ performance to be moved around. The banner will be lit at night during performances.

This image will be presented as 15in photograph in the sheltered interior space of the cool lounge at camp.  Each image will be accompanied by an audio track

Indian Cowboy was taken in the space of my installation at the Singapore Biennale. It is of picture of a reunion two friends, two Indians; one Singaporean one Malaysian, both artists both accompanied by family. This image will be presented as 15in photograph in the sheltered interior space of the cool lounge at camp.  Each image will be accompanied by an audio track.

The Mango of Truth Performance will be carried out three times during the Burning Man event, once at camp and two times on the playa.  At the heart of this performance is the presentation of an antique terracotta icon for Lord Krishna and the the gifting of mangos. 30 mangos will be offered to the audience at the end of each performance.
